The Pyrenees region of Western Victoria is well-known for producing red wines with great colour, body and richness. Barbera is the most widely planted red grape in Italy and its popularity has spread to many regions of the world. It ripens mid to late season, responding well to the low vigour soils and relatively moderate ripening temperatures of our Glenkara vineyards where it produces small crops of generously flavoured fruit.

Region: Pyrenees 100%

Composition: Barbera 100%

Harvest date: 15 April

Vintage conditions:

The 2011 season saw the drought break. Rain fell throughout spring and continued through summer and early autumn. This made for a challenging vintage but our resilient vines and constant vigilance allowed us to harvest fruit in excellent condition. The cool conditions favoured retention of acid which is always abundant in Barbera in any case. Thus, harvest was delayed until we saw the acid beginning to decrease through ripening and sugar accumulation.

Barbera’s naturally high acidity gives freshness and lift to the rich varietal fruit. Our approach here is to interfere as little as possible and allow the fruit to express itself without winemaking artefact. This is an exemplary Barbera with a shimmering vibrant colour, great varietal identity and enormous appeal. It shows what can be achieved with this unfairly overlooked variety.

Alcohol: 13.5%                        pH: 3.53                      T/A : 7.6 g/L

Tasting comments:

Vivid, glowing colour of great vibrancy and allure. Lifted, intensely aromatic nose, showing estery fruit and confection. It is complex without being complicated. Juicy, up-front flavours make this wine immediately enjoyable. A lovely mouthful of flavour, ripe berries, jubes and floral characters. The acidity is high, in keeping with the varietal identity, but the depth of fruit on the mid-palate and the finish brings the wine into harmony.
