The Pyrenees region of Western Victoria is well-known for producing red wines with great colour, body and richness. Merlot can be a difficult variety to grow well, being prone to poor fruit set, but the conditions of our Glenkara vineyard give us a reliable crop each year. Blocks 3 and 4 reliably provide the quality we seek.

Growing season progressed smoothly with no surprises. Soil moisture was adequate for the first time in years thanks to the wet weather in 2011. Harvest went well and fruit was delivered to the winery in good condition.
Picked when the grapes had developed the classic “chocolate” and “sweet tobacco” characters of ripe Merlot. The above average ripeness of the fruit meant that we did not need to work the fermentation aggressively to extract color and flavour. After pressing the wine was matured in French and American oak hogsheads for 14 months prior to bottling in August 2013.
Deep colour as normal in our Merlot. Spicy aromas of damson plum dark chocolate mulberry and black olive. Oak has been kept to minimum. Plummy, juicy mulberry flavours with round, generous mouthfeel. Layers of fruit mingle with spice and cedar from the oak maturation. This is an impressively structured merlot, built on strong foundation and shows how the variety can perform in the right condition. Its full body and generous proportion make it ideal to accompany rich meat dishes.
