The Mornington Peninsula is renowned for producing high quality Pinot Noir that shows distinctive varietal character and intensity of flavour. The Massoni winemakers like to make their Pinot Noir in a rich, weighty style that rewards cellaring but has enough fullness of flavour and softness to be enjoyed in its youth.
Region: Mornington Peninsula 100%
Composition: Pinot Noir 100%
Harvest date: 4th March
The 2011-12 growing season was relatively trouble-free although our fruit set was not as good as we had hoped. Consequently, the crop was low. We were able to source some fruit from another Peninsula grower whose fruit we know and liked. After the very difficult 2011 vintage, it was a pleasure to see the fruit in excellent condition.
The ripe fruit was gently crushed and fermented in small open vats. The must was pumped-over gently to avoid excessive extraction. One parcel of fruit was left on skins for extended maceration while the other vats were pressed after ten days. Maturation took place in small French oak barrels for ten months. The barrels were then assessed and blended before bottling in June 2013.
Alcohol: 13.0% v/v
Bright ruby appearance, vibrant and clear.
Morello cherry and fruit pastille aromas with some spicy oak on the nose. The palate is lively with more spicy, cool climate flavours than previous releases, testament to a mild growing season. Medium-bodied with a noticeable flavor contribution from the MV6 clone that makes up the greater portion of the blend. A long, complex and sustained finish rounds off the wine. Drinking well upon release and has the capacity to cellar for up to six years from release.
