Sangiovese is a classic Italian variety. It is not an easy grape to grow well, being demanding of site, clonal selection and crop level. The Pyrenees region of Western Victoria has the specific climatic and geographical conditions necessary for this variety to succeed.
Region: Pyrenees 100%
Composition: 100% Sangiovese
Harvest date: 15 April
The 2011 season saw the drought break. Rain fell throughout spring and continued through summer and early autumn. This made for a challenging vintage but our resilient vines and constant vigilance allowed us to harvest fruit in excellent condition. Sugar levels were lower than previous vintages and natural acidities were high—the natural, normal conditions for classic Sangiovese.
The cool, humid weather slowed ripening and we picked later than ever before. This was our first Sangiovese since 2005 so extra care was taken every step of the way. The fruit characters shone through from the beginning so a minimal intervention winemaking protocol was followed. After pressing, the wine completed MLF in barrel where it remained until bottling in February 2012.
Alcohol: 13.5% pH:3.52 T/A: 7.2 g/l
Bright crimson-red with a vibrancy not always seen in this variety. Lifted notes of dried herbs, meadow flowers and Morello cherries. Medium-bodied, showing spicy fruit and a generous middle palate that firms up through to the finish which is savoury and long. Distinctive varietal character gives this wine its special identity. The savoury character of the variety reveals itself on the finish which is dry and well-structured.
