The Pyrenees region of Western Victoria is well-known for producing red wines with great colour, body and richness. The three individual parcels of fruit for this wine were notable early in their life for their soft, generous texture which gave them an immediate appeal. We selected these parcels for the El Nino label where we aim for a modern approachable style.
Region: Pyrenees 100%
Composition: Shiraz: 100%
Vintage conditions:
The 2012 season was mild and the vines had the benefit of the previous wet year. Good soil moisture at the important growth periods was a luxury we hadn’t experienced for quite a few years. Consequently, vine health was good and crops were generally moderate. Some late rain threatened harvest but we were able to pick our fruit in excellent condition.
Winemaking
Grapes for this wine were selected from our best Shiraz block and harvested in peak condition. After fermenting on skins for seven days, the wine was pressed to barrel and tank for maturation. Bottling took place in November 2012.
Analysis:
Alcohol: 13.9%
Tasting comments:
Medium-deep ruby appearance
Very ripe, plum and prune fruit with a hint of oak. Declares its varietal and regional origins with a touch of mint and bayleaf.
A medium-to-full bodied style with great depth and richness. The tannins are soft, the fruit flavours are ripe and the overall effect is of generosity and balance. Drinking well on release with the capacity for short to medium term cellaring.
